Craquelure: Applying Craquelure Lacquer to Leather

A unique type of surface texture found on pigmented leathers is called craquelure, or "craquelé." To achieve this effect, a special lacquer is applied during the finishing stage of leather processing. As it dries, the lacquer cracks.

The leather itself is not damaged in the process. Rather, the visual effect of fine cracks on the surface gives the leather a more valuable and aged appearance.

On aniline leathers, the grain structure is already more exposed and delicate. Therefore, this type of leather should only be treated with craquelure lacquer on areas that are not subjected to heavy wear.
