Characteristics of Ostrich Leather
Ostrich leather is typically processed into smooth leather. It is characterized by its softness, durability, and a distinctively dimpled grain pattern.
This grain pattern is created by the feathers, and depending on the area of the skin, the dimples are either more widely or closely spaced. As a result, more waste must be taken into account in order to maintain the symmetry of the pattern. The leg skins are also processed into leather and have a scale-like appearance, similar to alligator leather.
Use of Ostrich Leather
To preserve the grain pattern, the leather is not heavily treated. It is most commonly used for bags, shoes, suitcases, clothing, and upholstery for sofas and armchairs. In haute couture, it is often used for accessories and shoes.
